Jak King's talk on December 8th

At 3:00 pm on Saturday 8th December, the Grandview Heritage Group is sponsoring an illustrated talk by Jak King on "The Birth of Our Community: Grandview 1890-1915." It was this quarter-century that turned Commercial Drive and Grandview from a raw forest to one of Vancouver's primary residential and shopping centres.

The talk will take place at the CFEC Room upstairs at Family Place at the south end of Britannia Community Centre facing Grandview Park (1655 William Street.)

Seats are limited and so we would welcome a note in advance to grandviewheritage@gmail.com to let us know you will be coming. We will be asking for a $10 donation to assist the work of the GHG.

Terrific work party today!

Hi Britannia Neighbours,
We had a huge crew of high school kids helping us rake today. They were kids who had forgotten their "gym strip" for gym class, so their teacher took them out into the community to "pick up litter"... but luckily for us, their first stop was in the Napier Greenway, where we were working, and we had lots of spare rakes and the kids went to work. What a great help! We filled ten of those huge garden-waste bags with oak leaves.
One more work party next Monday, and then we're probably done until the spring. Join us if you can, next Monday, 2:00-4:00.
Penny

Here's a photo I took earlier today of the fellow who feeds the pigeons in the Greenway. He has a pigeon eating from his hand. (I didn't take my camera to the work party today or I'd have take a photo of all the kids raking.)

Work party today...

Hi folks.
Paul and I showed up today and raked for about half an hour. We filled two leaf bags but then it started raining -- again -- and nobody else had appeared, so we called it quits.
We're thinking we should meet for a couple of more Mondays, so we can scoop up most of the oak leaves (because they don't really decompose very well and we don't want huge mountains of them on the garden beds) and then not have any more work parties until the spring.
What do you think?
Does Monday 2-4 suit you for Nov 26 and Dec 3?
Cheers,
Penny

Hillary's tri-fold brochure!

Hi.
Hillary has created a really nice brochure that we can put in the little brochure holder thingy on our sandwich board sign ...
I'll get copies made for Monday's work party (rain or shine!!), but in the meantime, I thought you'd like to see it. (Note that it will be printed in black-and-white, not colour.)
Cheers,
Penny

Work Party Monday, 2:00-4:00

Hi folks,
We had a work party on the Monday holiday from 2:00-4:00 but Paul and I were the only partiers.
Melanie was there picking up litter, too. We raked and bagged up about five bags of leaves, but by 3:00 it was raining pretty hard and no one else had arrived to help out, so we called it quits.
Hope no one showed up later than 3:00 and found us gone!
We'll have another work party next Monday. I'll send a reminder on the weekend.
Cheers,
Penny

Here's Melanie, hard at work! After she picked up all the litter today, she helped me and Paul with the raking.

Sad news about the Drive Organics mural!

Someone has painted ugly graffiti on Victoria Oginski's beautiful Drive Organics mural. I think we need to get this repaired as soon as possible so that it isn't tagged again. Emmett, I'm wondering if Drive Organics would contribute toward the repainting? Victoria, do you have time to do the repair soon, and, if so, how much would it cost? I'm quite sure Britannia Neigbours will be able to contribute towards it.
Cheers and thanks,
Penny

Please vote!

Subject: EYA pollinator program

Hi Everyone,

For many of you, it has been quite some time since I've been in touch!

I wanted to let you know that EYA has been shortlisted for a BC Hydro competition to win $10,000 for our highly successful pollinator programming. We're now in the public voting stage where we are trying to get as many votes as possible in the next 30 days to win one of 5 prizes (seems this is the way big companies want non-profits to access funding these days) :).  If you have a moment, please go to this link, and click the vote button (not "support" - this is for schools only). That's it, unless you want to watch the promo video while you're at it. No need to set up an account, no email to leave, no bad advertising, very simple. AND, you can do it once a day till December 7. Put it in your daily reminders. Tell your buddies too!

Thanks sooo much!!

In bee solidarity,
-Hartley

Work Party next Monday... 2:00-4:00!

Hi, Britannia Neighbours.
We had a work party yesterday afternoon. Eva and Christine did a lot of raking and Janet and Sandy used solvent on the graffiti on the benches and really cleaned them up nicely. We're thinking of cleaning them up once again in the spring ... and then spray-painting them with a fresh coat of silver paint.
In the meantime, we have tons more oak leaves to contend with, so we will have a work party on Monday November 12th (even though it's a holiday Monday). And because it's getting dark so early nowadays, we thought it would be good to move our time-slot an hour earlier, to 2:00-4:00.
So, come if you can. No pressure. No need to RSVP. Bring a rake if you have one. I'll get more leaf bags.
Cheers,
Penny

Work Party Monday, Nov 5th, 3:00

Hi Britannia Neighbours,
There are a LOT of oak leaves and acorns that need raking up. We've got two new City compost containers over by Drive Organics' parking lot, so we can put some leaves in those.
We usually work from 3:00-5:00. Come if you are able!
Bring a rake if you have one; if not, we have a few.
Cheers,
Penny
